The Porsche 986 Boxster shares its headlights with the first 911 996, and so do the weak points. Factory-fitted options were H7/H7 halogen headlights and D2S/H7 Litronic single-xenon projector headlights, made by Bosch/Automotive Lighting. That lighting technology is now more than 25 years old.
The halogen reflectors give an average beam even when new, and heat and age dull the reflective layer further. The 2.5-inch Litronic projector only handles low beam and is known to lose its coating until it is nearly black inside, which leaves very little usable light.
New original Boxster headlights are expensive, and used ones have the same ageing problems. Instead, there are three kits that fit inside your existing 986 headlights:
- Halogen to bi-xenon: a bi-xenon projector conversion for the halogen headlights.
- Halogen to Bi-LED: a modern Bi-LED projector for the halogen headlights.
- Litronic xenon repair & upgrade: replaces the single-xenon projector with a bi-xenon one, so low and high beam both come from the projector.
All components are new and come with a 2-year warranty. Whichever kit you choose, your Boxster's headlights will give a sharper cut-off and far more light than before.
