Choosing an H7 headlight bulb is harder than it looks. Marketing lumen claims are unreliable, and "road legal" labels vary by country. This database cuts through the noise: 12 H7 LED replacement lamps and 8 halogen lamps, all measured under identical conditions on a calibrated ECE R112/R123 test board. Compare the full results below and make an informed decision.

The short answerFor low beam use, the Osram Night Breaker Laser (64210DWNBSP) is our top LED pick: road legal, minimal stray light, and easy plug-and-play installation. For high beam only, the 64210DWINN produces more raw output. Among halogens, the Osram Night Breaker 220 (64210NB220) leads the field.

Test setup and methodology

All lamps were tested in the left H7 reflector headlight (Valeo) of a 2018 Volkswagen Polo MK7, a common, representative reflector housing used in millions of European cars. The headlight was mounted on a fixed rig at 3 metres distance from a standardised ECE R112/R123 measurement board. All measurements were taken with a calibrated klux meter.

LED lamps were measured after a 3-minute warm-up period to capture stable operating temperature, not peak cold-start performance. Halogen lamps were measured at full operating temperature (approx. 30 seconds after switch-on).

ECE R112/R123 measurement board showing all test positions: 25L, B50L, 75L, 50L, HV, 50V, H1-H4, 75R, 50R, 25R, used for H7 LED and halogen headlight testing

The ECE R112/R123 measurement board at 3 metres. The cut-off line (H) runs horizontally; measurement points cover spread, hotspot, sight distance, and stray light above the cut-off (B50L).

Scoring system (1-10)

Each lamp receives an overall score from 1 to 10 based on four criteria. The weighting reflects real-world priorities for daily low-beam use:

  • Light output (40%), total klux score after 3-minute warm-up, normalised to the best lamp in each category
  • Stray light / B50L (30%), lower B50L means a higher score; critical for the safety of oncoming traffic in reflector headlights
  • Easy installation (15%), plug-and-play without modification; no large rear heatsink blocking access
  • Road legal (15%), confirmed ECE R128 type approval for on-road use in EU/UK
Three H7 headlight bulbs side by side: standard halogen, Osram easy-install LED without rear heatsink, Osram LED with large rear heatsink, illustrating the installation difference

What "easy install" means: left = standard H7 halogen, centre = compact easy-install LED (no rear heatsink, fits any vehicle), right = LED with rear heatsink (may not fit in all vehicles due to space behind the headlight).

Note
Halogen lamps are scored on output (55%), stray light (30%), and lifespan (15%). All halogen lamps are road legal and easy to install by definition, so those two criteria do not differentiate.

All values in klux (klx). Cold start and 3-min values measured at position 50V. Drop % = (cold minus 3min) / cold x 100.

Warm-up performance: why 3 minutes matters

LED chips lose efficiency as their junction temperature rises. This means an LED lamp at cold start can produce significantly more light than the same lamp after 3 minutes of operation. In our test, warm-up drop ranged from 7.9% (Lumileds LUM11972U2500CX) to a striking 42.2% (Bevinsee Z26).

This matters because many marketing measurements, and online comparison videos, are taken at cold start, immediately after switch-on. A lamp that starts at 5.8 klx but drops to 3.42 klx after 3 minutes (Osram 64210DWINN, -41%) is not the "best" lamp for a 30-minute night drive. Always evaluate lamps at stable operating temperature.

Up to 42% less light after warm-up
LED lamps with large cold-start numbers often have the worst warm-up drop. The Bevinsee Z26 starts at 3.39 klx but stabilises at just 1.96 klx, a 42% reduction in forward visibility compared to its cold-start output.

Stray light (B50L): glare in reflector headlights

In reflector headlights, the light cut-off is generated by the reflector geometry itself, which is designed precisely for the halogen filament's position and size. LED replacements place the light source differently, often causing light to spill above the cut-off into the B50L zone, the area that directly blinds oncoming drivers at 50 degrees left above the horizontal.

All halogen lamps measured 0.02-0.03 klx at B50L, negligible. Among LED replacements, the Osram 64210DWNBSP, Bevinsee Z26, and Lumileds LUM11972U92X2 matched halogen levels (0.03 klx). The worst offender was the Osram 64210DWINN at 0.42 klx, 21x more stray light than the best halogen.

Verdict and buying guide

Best for low beam (LED)

Winner
Osram Night Breaker Laser, 64210DWNBSP. Road legal (ECE R128 approved), minimal stray light (B50L: 0.03 klx, identical to halogen), plug-and-play installation without a large rear heatsink, and a strong stable output of 12.44 klux total / 2.84 klux at the 50V sight distance position. The clear winner for everyday low-beam use in a reflector headlight.

Best for high beam only (LED)

Also worth knowing
Osram 64210DWINN, for high beam use. With a total beam score of 19.08 klux and the highest output at every spread position, the DWINN produces the most raw light in the test. The trade-offs are road legality (not ECE R128 approved) and a large rear heatsink that may not fit in all vehicles. For high beam, which has no cut-off and uses a completely different beam pattern, stray light above the horizontal is irrelevant by design. Not recommended for low beam use.

Best halogen

Winner
Osram Night Breaker 220, 64210NB220. Highest halogen total score (9.56 klux), best 50V forward sight distance among halogens (2.12 klux), and minimal stray light (0.02 klux). Road legal and easy to install as standard. The best drop-in upgrade if you want to stay with halogen.

Should you switch from halogen to LED?

A few years ago, the answer to this question was genuinely complicated. Early LED replacement lamps had poor beam accuracy, high stray light, unreliable warm-up behaviour, and questionable longevity. That picture has changed substantially.

The best LED replacements today, like the Osram Night Breaker Laser, produce accurate, well-controlled beams with stray light levels that match standard halogen lamps. Combined with output roughly 30% higher than the best halogen in our test, the real-world improvement in forward visibility is meaningful and measurable.

Yes, a quality LED replacement costs more upfront than a halogen lamp. But LED chips last far longer than halogen filaments, potentially the lifetime of the car. And the improvement in night vision comfort and safety, which compounds over every kilometre driven in darkness, is in our view a straightforward case: if you drive regularly at night, switching to a quality LED replacement makes sense.

Our conclusion
LED replacement technology for H7 reflector headlights has matured to the point where the objections, stray light, stability, fitment, are manageable with the right lamp choice. The higher purchase price is offset by longer lifespan and genuine safety gains. If you do switch, choose a road-legal lamp with low B50L stray light, the Osram Night Breaker Laser (64210DWNBSP) checks all the boxes.
ConclusionTwenty H7 lamps tested, one clear winner for low-beam use: the Osram Night Breaker Laser (64210DWNBSP). It combines road-legal status, minimal stray light, easy installation, and strong stable output in a single package. For maximum high-beam output the 64210DWINN leads, stray light is irrelevant for high beam given its unrestricted beam pattern, so only check fitment and road legality before purchasing. Among halogens, the Night Breaker 220 remains the benchmark. Whatever you choose: measure at stable temperature and verify road legality for your country.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best H7 LED replacement bulb for low beam?+

Based on our ECE R112 beam measurements, the Osram Night Breaker Laser (64210DWNBSP) is the best H7 LED replacement for low-beam use. It is road legal (ECE R128 approved), produces minimal stray light above the cut-off (0.03 klux, identical to halogen), fits without modification in most vehicles, and delivers 12.44 klux total beam output after warm-up, the best combination of all four criteria in our test.

Why does warm-up time matter for LED headlight bulbs?+

LED chips lose efficiency as they heat up. In our test, some LED lamps lost up to 42% of their initial light output after 3 minutes of operation. This means cold-start measurements, often used in marketing, can significantly overstate the real-world brightness you experience on a longer drive. Always compare lamps at stable operating temperature (after at least 3 minutes) for a fair comparison.

Are H7 LED replacement bulbs road legal in Europe?+

It depends on the specific lamp. In the EU, UN Regulation 128 (ECE R128) permits LED replacement lamps in type-approved housings, but only if the lamp itself carries ECE R128 approval. Of the LED lamps in our test, the Osram Night Breaker Laser range (64210DWNBSP, DWNBST, DWNBSM, DWNBG2) and Osram LEDriving HL Easy (64210DWESY2) carry this approval. Most other aftermarket LED replacements do not. Always verify for your specific country.

What is B50L and why does it matter?+

B50L is a standardised ECE measurement point at 50° left, above the horizontal cut-off line. It measures how much light spills above the cut-off into the zone that would blind oncoming drivers. A value close to 0 is ideal, all halogen lamps in our test measured 0.02-0.03 klux. Some LED replacements measured 10-20 times higher, meaning they create significant glare for oncoming traffic even though they look bright from the driver's seat.

Is switching from halogen to LED worth it?+

For most drivers who use their car regularly at night, yes. The best H7 LED replacements today produce roughly 30% more usable forward light than the best halogen lamp at stable temperature, with beam accuracy that matches halogen stray light levels. They also last significantly longer than halogen bulbs. The higher upfront cost is offset by fewer replacements and a genuine, measurable improvement in night-driving visibility and safety.
