Test setup and methodology

Scoring system (1-10)
Each lamp receives an overall score from 1 to 10 based on four criteria. The weighting reflects real-world priorities for daily low-beam use:
- Light output (40%), total klux score after 3-minute warm-up, normalised to the best lamp in each category
- Stray light / B50L (30%), lower B50L means a higher score; critical for the safety of oncoming traffic in reflector headlights
- Easy installation (15%), plug-and-play without modification; no large rear heatsink blocking access
- Road legal (15%), confirmed ECE R128 type approval for on-road use in EU/UK
What "easy install" means: left = standard H7 halogen, centre = compact easy-install LED (no rear heatsink, fits any vehicle), right = LED with rear heatsink (may not fit in all vehicles due to space behind the headlight).

Warm-up performance: why 3 minutes matters
LED chips lose efficiency as their junction temperature rises. This means an LED lamp at cold start can produce significantly more light than the same lamp after 3 minutes of operation. In our test, warm-up drop ranged from 7.9% (Lumileds LUM11972U2500CX) to a striking 42.2% (Bevinsee Z26).
This matters because many marketing measurements, and online comparison videos, are taken at cold start, immediately after switch-on. A lamp that starts at 5.8 klx but drops to 3.42 klx after 3 minutes (Osram 64210DWINN, -41%) is not the "best" lamp for a 30-minute night drive. Always evaluate lamps at stable operating temperature.
Stray light (B50L): glare in reflector headlights
In reflector headlights, the light cut-off is generated by the reflector geometry itself, which is designed precisely for the halogen filament's position and size.
