The Audi A4 B5 is renowned for introducing the new 1.8L 20v engine, based on what Audi Sport had developed for their Super Touring race cars, and the tiptronic automatic transmission, which drew on the Porsche 911 design, to the Audi line-up. It remained in production 1994-1999, setting the standard for the new B5 platform. The lighting technology used in this car is however more than 20 years old today.
Factory-fitted options included H7/H7 halogen and H4 halogen as well as D2S/H7 single-xenon headlights, all manufactured by Hella.
The halogen versions feature an old type of reflector with fluted lenses, which produces an average light beam even when new. In many cases, its light output has been further compromised as bulb heat and general ageing cause the reflective layer to peel off. Since these headlights have fluted lenses, retrofitting the projector does cause some distortion of the light beam, but it still provides better lighting than a plug-and-play xenon kit.
The single-xenon setup features a 2.5-inch projector, designed in the late 90s. These projectors are known to lose their reflective layer right to the point where they become black inside, causing dangerously low light output.
Needless to say, buying new or used original headlights for your Audi A4 B5 is not recommended. But there is fortunately no need for that.
