The Mazda MX-5 third generation (NC), is produced from 2005 to 2015, and the third version of the successful Mazda MX-5. It made Car and Driver's 10Best list from 2006 to 2013 and received the Vehicle of the Year Japan Award.
Factory-fitted options included low-beam halogen H7 - high beam HB3 9005 halogen projector headlights and HID xenon D2S low-beam - HB3 9005 high-beam options, manufactured by Koito.
Even new, these projectors are not bad, but also don't really impress. And in many cases, its light output has been further compromised as a bulb and general aging cause the reflective layer to peel off.
The single-halogen setup features a 2.5-inch projector, designed in the late 90s. These projectors are known to lose their reflective layer, where they become black inside, causing dangerously low light output.
Needless to say, buying new or used original headlights for your Mazda MX-5 Miata is not recommended. But there is, fortunately, no need for that. There are upgrade kits that will fit inside your existing headlights.Â
These complete retrofit kits provide you with superior brightness and durability and they are also very affordable. Since all components are brand new, they come with a 2-year warranty. Additional benefits over OEM headlights include Canbus-proof designs and effortless halogen-to-xenon conversions. What’s more, the leveling systems will work without any adjustments to the headlight connectors, and you can use any ballasts you might already own to save further on xenon upgrades.
No matter which retrofit upgrade kit you pick, you will improve the light output considerably, making for safer and more enjoyable driving. And, of course, your Mazda MX-5 NC will look awesome with the luxurious bright light of the latest bi-xenon or Bi-led technology.
